Joanna Barton Obituary

Joanna Biddle Barton died on December 2, 2021.  She had been a resident of Belle Haven, VA, for over 30 years.  She was born in Stamford, CT, in 1925, the daughter of Harry Mead and Joanna Eckert Mead.  She grew up in Arizona and California and moved to Mexico with her family in 1941.  After graduation from the American High School, she worked at the US Embassy in Mexico City for four years.  After returning to the US, she worked for the US Department of State in Washington, DC.  She married Richard Wyndham Barton, an attorney for the District of Columbia government, in 1953 in Alexandria, VA.  After leaving the Department of State, she worked at the Smithsonian Institution, first at the Renwick Gallery and later at the Air and Space Museum.  After she and her husband retired, they moved to Belle Haven, having become greatly attached to the Eastern Shore from their frequent trips to visit the area. She and her husband were both active members of the congregation of St. George’s Episcopal Church for many years.  Richard Barton died in 2001.  Her elder son, Charles Edward Stuart Barton, died in 1971.  Her surviving children are Joanna Maria Barton and Ian Locheil Barton.  Her children wish to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the workers at Riverside Hospice for their care and kindness during her final months as well as to those at Commonwealth Senior Living, where she spent her last few weeks.
