James "Jay" Lewis Burroughs, Jr.

James Lewis “Jay” Burroughs Jr., 60 of Eastville, VA, departed this life Sunday, September 26. 2021 after struggling recently with a debilitating pulmonary illness. A native of Eastville, Jay was predeceased by his father and best friend the late James L. Burroughs Sr. and his loving mother the late Norma Wallace Burroughs, his maternal grandparents the late Elmer “Slubby” Wallace and Kathryn Wallace, paternal grandparents the late John Burroughs Sr. and Gladys Burroughs, late uncle John Burroughs Jr. and late aunt Margaret B. Kellam.

From a young age it was clear Jay was anything but the status-quo. Even as a child he marched to the beat of his own drum. He was truly one of a kind. Jay grew up in Smith Beach where he enjoyed being on the water especially at sunset, time spent with friends, serving as Mayor of Sandbar Sundays, and most of all working on anything with a motor. Jay possessed a laid back, easy-going demeanor with a soft-spoken wit and countless one liners. A friend to many, and enemy to none, Jay will be sorely missed by his family and community.

Jay is survived by his sister Denise Burroughs Lewis and her husband Jerry of Cape Charles, nephew J.D. Lewis, niece Kelley L. Parks, and her husband Spencer, companion Jean White and her children and grandchildren, a first cousin, Joan Kellam as well as many other close friends and relatives. 

Services will be conducted graveside at Johnson's Cemetery in Johnsontown Friday October, 1 2021 at 2:00PM with Pastor Pete Hinman officiating, assisted by David Campbell. Immediately following the ceremony family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life at Jay’s favorite restaurant/hangout Yuk Yuk & Joe's in Eastville.
