Barbara (Kelley) Jewett

Barbara "Kelley" Jewett  of Atlantic, Virginia passed away on Saturday, August 22.  The Eastern Shore lost a great humanitarian and friend to animals in Barbara Kelley Jewett.  Since first moving to Chincoteague in 1996, Kelley opened her own successful business in the Village Mall on Main Street and built her dream home on the water.

Kelley's overwhelming compassion for animals drove her to her true calling, animal rescue and rehab.  Over the next several years Mrs. Jewett worked tirelessly on behalf of the stray cat population of Chincoteague and the Eastern Shore.  Kelley dedicated the next 25 years to financing and organizing veterinary care for thousands of cats and kittens.

Upon purchasing the Village Mall in 2004, she immediately donated part of the space to her charity and to finding loving homes for countless more unfortunate strays.

She is survived by her 3 children; Carmen, Michael, and Matthew; and 5 grandchildren.  She will be greatly missed by her family, the local community, and the many friends that became her extended family.

A memorial service will be held at her home at 11173 Channel Road in Atlantic, Virginia on Saturday August 29 from 1 to 4 p.m.  All are welcome .  In lieu of flowers please donate to local humane charities or better yet, arrange to have a local stray vaccinated, spayed, or neutered.
